First gym day checklist: arrive with a clearer plan

A practical checklist for your first gym visit, from booking an induction to recording your session.

Before you leave

Check opening hours, induction requirements and what your membership includes. Pack comfortable training clothes, suitable footwear, water, a towel if required and any access pass. Ask your gym about lockers rather than assuming a particular lock will work.

Start with an introduction

Ask staff to show you the training areas, equipment adjustments and emergency procedures. An induction is a chance to ask questions. A written plan cannot observe your technique or confirm that a movement is appropriate for you.

Keep your first visit manageable

Use a plan suited to your starting point. You do not have to try every machine or match another person’s weights. Ask a qualified trainer for help with unfamiliar movements and equipment.

Record useful details

Note the exercise name, machine settings, the resistance used and any questions for a trainer. The goal of your log is to make the next visit easier to prepare for, not to compete with someone else.

Before your next visit

Check which session comes next and choose a realistic time to return. If something caused pain or felt wrong, seek appropriate guidance rather than using a generic online substitution.
